BALLET

School of Classical Ballet

2017-2018 Year: September 5, 2017 - June 3, 2018

Fall Term: September 5 - December 17

Pre-Ballet Age 3 *Students must turn 3 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Fridays, 3:30-4:15pm
Pre-ballet is an introduction to dance using creative movement and very basic ballet steps and terminology. Through movement games and activities children will learn and practice spatial awareness, rhythm, balance and coordination.

Primary Ballet I Age 4 *Students must turn 4 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Mondays, 3:30-4:15pm; and Saturdays, 9:30-10:15am
This class introduces children to creative movement and very basic ballet positions and terminology. We begin sitting in a circle, doing a series of stretches accompanied by music and visual imagery. Slowly we stand and work on ballet positions and moving across the floor.

Primary Ballet I Ages 4-6 *Students must turn 4 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Sundays, 10:00-10:45am
This class introduces children to creative movement and very basic ballet positions and terminology. We begin sitting in a circle, doing a series of stretches accompanied by music and visual imagery. Slowly we stand and work on ballet positions and moving across the floor.

Primary Ballet I Ages 5-6 *Students must turn 5 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Wednesdays, 3:30-4:15pm; and Saturdays, 9:30-10:15am

Primary Ballet II Ages 6-7 *Students must turn 6 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Wednesdays, 4:30–5:30pm; Saturdays, 10:30-11:30am; and Sundays, 11:00am-12:00pm
Primary II class opens with a series of exercises at the barre followed by stretches, ballet positions and combinations in the center. Students begin to learn how to connect barre and center work as they gain strength and musicality.

Primary Ballet III Ages 7-8 *Students must turn 7 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Wednesdays, 5:30-6:30pm
Primary III class opens with a series of exercises at the barre followed by stretches, ballet positions and combinations in the center. Students begin to learn how to connect barre and center work as they gain strength and musicality.

Primary Ballet III/Ballet I Ages 7-9 *Students must turn 7 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Saturdays, 11:00am-12:00pm
In Primary III/Ballet I more focus is placed on barre work, and students begin more challenging exercises at the barre. Students continue stretching and center work as they develop strength and musicality.

Ballet Foundations Ages 9 and Up *Students must turn 9 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Thursdays, 3:30-5:00pm
Ballet Foundations is a class for students who have had at least 6 months-one year of ballet instruction. The Fall 2017 Term will focus on technique and mastering the most important ballet steps so students gain strength and precision for more complicated steps to be learned during the Spring 2018 Term.

Beginning Ballet Ages 9 and Up *Students must turn 9 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Saturdays, 10:30am-12:00pm
This class is for students who have always had an interest in ballet but have never taken a class before, or who have taken a class when they were younger and want to start again. In a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere students will gain proficiency in the elemental steps of ballet while gaining an appreciation for dance as an art form.

Ballet I 2nd Year Ages 8-10 *Students must turn 8 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Mondays, 3:30-5:00pm; and Wednesdays, 3:30-5:00pm
In the 2nd year of Ballet I students learn more challenging exercises at the barre. Students continue stretching and center work as they progress in strength and musicality.

Ballet II Ages 10-12 *Students must turn 10 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Mondays, 5:00-6:30pm; and Thursdays, 5:00-6:30pm
In Ballet II students continue to progress with challenging exercises at the barre. Class is an hour and a half so students can concentrate on more center work to strengthen technique and musicality.

Ballet II/III Ages 11-14 *Students must turn 11 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Wednesdays, 5:00-6:30pm; and Saturdays, 12:00-1:30pm
Students learn proficiency at the barre and master more complicated center work. Emphasis on musicality and precision of movement continues as we concentrate on combining knowledge of ballet steps into fluid dance combinations.. This class is for students who have taken at least 2 years of continuous ballet instruction.

Ballet III/IV/V Ages 13 and Up *Students must turn 13 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Tuesdays, 5:00-6:30pm
Students learn proficiency at the barre and continue with complicated center work. Emphasis on musicality and precision of movement continue as we concentrate on combining knowledge of ballet steps into fluid dance combinations. Students who are ready may be working on pointe. This class is for students who have taken 2-3 years of continuous ballet instruction.

Ballet IV/V Ages 14 and Up *Students must turn 14 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Wednesdays, 6:30-8:00pm; and Saturdays, 12:00-1:30pm
Students pursue proficiency at the barre and continue with complicated center work. Emphasis on musicality and precision of technique continue as we concentrate on combining knowledge of ballet steps into fluid dance combinations. Students who are ready may be working on pointe. This class is for teens who have taken at least 2-3 years of continuous ballet instruction.

Repertory Company Ages 11 and Up *Students must turn 11 by September 1st, 2017*
This year, we are continuing with our Repertory Company for serious students ages 11+, entering 6th grade and up. The Repertory Company will offer students the chance to perform in various locations around the city. In March 2018, they will perform in their own show at the Dance Complex Theatre. In order to join the Repertory Company, students must commit to three classes per week–two ballet and one modern or modern/jazz. They must also commit to two one-hour rehearsals, which will be on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons. For these rehearsals, guest instructors will choreograph musical theatre, hip hop, tap, and modern dances to be performed in the March performance. Participation in the company will enable students to strengthen their technique and performance ability. This will also build confidence, friendships and artistic appreciation through dance.

FLAMENCO

Yosi Karahashi

Youth/Family Flamenco - ages 6 + up and willing parents - Fridays: 5:00-6:00pm

Flamenco is composed of many palos, each of them with it's own rhythm and beat, character and expression. Because of this, learning flamenco will expose students to a very broad range of rhythms and musicality, and helps develop coordination through footwork, hand clapping and body movement.

But most important of all ... it's lots of fun!! Ole!

HIP HOP

Hip-hop dance is a dynamic, high energy dance style performed to the beats and rhythm of hip-hop music. It can include a wide variety of styles like breaking, popping, and locking. It also emphasizes freestyling and improvisational movement. Class will begin with a warm-up and will move onto basic footwork steps and sequences, ending with fun and challenging dance combinations.

HOOP DANCE

The group will explore hula hoops for waist and hand hooping, learning tricks, partner moves and simple choreography. This class encourages kids of all abilities to explore movement in a fun and accessible way, allowing plenty of time for personal exploration and creativity.

Rainbowdance - Art & Technique of Isadora Duncan.Duncan Dance - Ages 1 1/2 - 3 years (with caregiver) - Tuesdays: 10:00-11:00am

Class description: Rainbowdance: Primary Rainbowdance is offered to children aged 1.5 - 3 years and a caregiver. A structured sequence of sound and gesture integrated movement activities encourage secure attachment to the caregiver and to the peer group, while providing a soothing and energizing first experience with peers. Through the language of the body children learn to discriminate safe and positive facial cues and physical territory exploring music, soft props and story.

Duncan Dance.Duncan Dance - Ages 3 -5 years - Tuesdays: 11:00am-noon; AND 4:00-5:00pm

Class description: Rainbowdance Preschool is the developmental sequel for children aged 3-5 years. The focus in the program is upon exploring the many dynamics of peer relationships. Children dance the sequences of the Primary program but are challenged toward competency as they embody stories whose themes are appropriate to healthy social development. Focus is placed upon reciprocity and the place of the child in the natural world.

Duncan Dance - Teen/Adult - Tuesdays: 5:30- 6:30pm

Class Description: The Art & Technique of Isadora Duncan: Rainbowdance prepares children aged 5-18, for this program. Having an established sense of harmony and affiliation to each other and to the natural world, they move forward to explore their unique and collective beauty and expression. Children explore emotional intention as it is manifested through music and physical movement. Themes include: Leadership and Following, Join and Retreat, Transition, Alone and together, Nature as Teacher, Myth Based Dances and Improvisation. Mothers of 8-11 year olds may dance along for free; Teen moms will pay a reduced rate to join their child’s class. Dancers with special needs are always welcome. We will work with you to find the right class placement and offer 1:1 sessions when appropriate.

Modern/Jazz fuses various dance styles from funk to ballet. After basic jazz and modern-style warm-up exercises, students learn to express their creative selves while concentrating on having fun and building strength, rhythm, and lyricism.

Advanced Beginning Modern/Jazz Ages 10 and Up *Students must turn 10 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Tuesdays, 3:30-5:00pm
Modern/Jazz fuses various dance styles from funk to ballet. After basic jazz and modern-style warm-up exercises, students learn to express their creative selves while concentrating on having fun and building strength, rhythm, and lyricism.

Modern/Jazz I Ages 11 and Up *Students must turn 11 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Fridays, 3:30–5:00pm
In Modern/Jazz 1 we will sharpen the focus on modern and jazz techniques, while expanding our movement vocabulary and emphasizing creative self expression. After a series of jazz and modern-style warm-up exercises, students will work on choreography and across the floor combinations. This class is for students who have taken at least 1-2 years of continuous modern or jazz dance instruction.

Modern II Ages 14 and Up *Students must turn 14 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Saturdays, 1:30-3:00pm
Modern II focuses on the techniques of Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and Lester Horton. Emphasis will be placed on building strength in our floor and center exercises, and concentration is on having fun and dancing to eclectic rhythms. Improvisation will be introduced as a form of creating movement. This class is for students who have taken at least 2-3 years of continuous modern dance instruction.

TAP

School of Classical Ballet

2017-2018 Year: September 5, 2017 - June 3, 2018

Beginning Tap Ages 6 and Up *Students must turn 6 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Wednesdays, 3:30-4:30pm
Tap is an exciting form of dance in which dancers use their feet like drums to create rhythmic patterns and timely beats. In a relaxed, encouraging and energetic environment, students will learn single tap steps, then incorporate them into series of combinations. Emphasis will be on producing clean tap sounds with each step. A few of the basic tap steps include the brush, flap, shuffle, and ball change.

Tap I/II Ages 8 and Up *Students must turn 8 by September 1st, 2017*
Meets Wednesdays, 5:00-6:00pm
Tap is an exciting form of dance in which dancers use their feet like drums to create rhythmic patterns and timely beats. In a relaxed, encouraging and energetic environment, students will learn single tap steps, then incorporate them into series of combinations. Emphasis will be on developing skills, focusing on clarity of sounds and introducing dynamics and musicality. This class is for students who have had at least one year of tap dance instruction.
