TangoEmbrace classes at this level retain focus on comfort and dynamism in the partner frame. Explore the dynamic and expressive range of tango movement. Mestre MANHOSO

Capoeira Angola - Saturdays: 3:00-5:00pm, $18.00/class

Capoeira Angola developed in Brazil from a variety of African sources. N’golo from Angola, rhythms from Congo, and acrobatics from Guinea combined to form a martial art disguised as a dance and played like a game. All these elements together with a deliberate sense of fun result in a vigorous workout for the body and mind.

The class is designed to build a strong foundation in brand new students, while furthering the development of more experienced players.

The class follows a philosophy espoused by Mestre Joao Grande and Mestre Pastinha before him of “Nine movements lead to nine million.” The nine fundamental movements of Capoeira Angola are practiced each class with an emphasis on mindful and constant improvement of the essential details. Theses movements are then combined into a variety of sequences and two person drills that allow students of all levels to further their understanding of how the movements work and function in the game of Capoeira Angola.

Class will provide instruction in the percussion instruments of the art and how to sing the songs associated with the style, as well as the historical and cultural foundations of Capoeira.

Students will learn to play berimbau, pandeiro, agogo, atabaque, reco reco, and to sing in the traditional fashion.

Tap Dance

Christina Harrington

Beginner and Intermediate Adult Tap Dance - Saturdays: 1:00-2:30pm (Beginner from 1:00-2:00) $10.00 / ADD the (Intermediate from 2:00-2:30) for a total of $14.00

Both levels are offered together in a combined 90 minute class. Classes are “drop-in”, meaning you may join any week and there’s no weekly or “semester” commitment. Pre-registration is not required. Since classes are offered as drop-in style, I always review past steps and try to introduce 1 or 2 new steps each class. Beginners will feel welcome regardless of when they join.

Beginner Level 1 - The first hour of class is dedicated to Beginner steps and basic choreography. This part of class is open to all students of all levels. Starting fresh with the very basics, you will develop a repertoire of steps and learn to put them together in basic choreography. For those with little or no tap experience, or those who would like a refresher on the basics. Appropriate for adults and high school teens of most fitness levels. Level 1 focuses mainly on learning the basics of tap: shuffle, flap, slap, buffalo, hops, essence, heel, toe, stamp, stomp, cramp roll, ball change, Manhattan, drawbacks, maxi ford and all of the various combos involving these steps like flap ball change, shuffle hop step, flap toe hop, flap heel, with a strong emphasis on technique and repetition in order to encourage muscle memory and confidence to create sounds clearly each time.

Intermediate Level 2 - The last 30 minutes of class are offered for students who wish to stay and try intermediate/advanced steps and combinations; prior tap experience is strongly recommended. Develop a larger repertoire of steps, and apply existing knowledge of the basics to faster and more complex combinations. Level 2 includes more complex steps including double drawbacks, double and triple buffalo, Cincinnati, time steps, traveling time steps, military, Irish, waltz clog, double and single pullbacks, cramp roll turns, maxi ford with a pick-up, etc. Class will incorporate a lot of quick footwork that may not necessarily involve difficult steps, but that require strong technique and speed.

Clothing: Comfortable exercise-type clothing, pants short enough to see ankles (or rolled up). Tap shoes are not required for the first class or two (wear socks--bare feet will stick to the floor!). STREET SHOES ARE NOT ALLOWED IN ANY STUDIO AT ANY TIME.
