I also use some Gyrokensis/ Gyrotonics ideas and theories to help students understand motivation for some of their movements. I pull from my own knowledge of dance and performance to help students develop their own style in their movement rather than telling them what they can and can’t do. I use humor as a motivational tool without it being at the expense of another and classes are always filled with laughter and sweat.

Mestre MANHOSO

Capoeira Angola - Saturdays 3:00-5:00pm, $15/class

Capoeira Angola developed in Brazil from a variety of African sources. N’golo from Angola, rhythms from Congo, and acrobatics from Guinea combined to form a martial art disguised as a dance and played like a game. All these elements together with a deliberate sense of fun result in a vigorous workout for the body and mind.

The class is designed to build a strong foundation in brand new students, while furthering the development of more experienced players.

The class follows a philosophy espoused by Mestre Joao Grande and Mestre Pastinha before him of “Nine movements lead to nine million.” The nine fundamental movements of Capoeira Angola are practiced each class with an emphasis on mindful and constant improvement of the essential details. Theses movements are then combined into a variety of sequences and two person drills that allow students of all levels to further their understanding of how the movements work and function in the game of Capoeira Angola.

Class will provide instruction in the percussion instruments of the art and how to sing the songs associated with the style, as well as the historical and cultural foundations of Capoeira.

Students will learn to play berimbau, pandeiro, agogo, atabaque, reco reco, and to sing in the traditional fashion.

Elements collide; come together and pull apart, shifting, reforming and transforming through dance. We will use specific choreography (or Butoh-Fu) and improvisation. Kathak is a highly sophisticated classical performing art characterized by intricate footwork, expressive movement of the hands and face, rhythmic intensity, swift turns and elegant stances. Wearing rows of small, brass bells on each ankle, the dancer alternates between recitation, footwork, fixed compositions, improvisation and story telling. In these classes, we focus on three aspects of the dance: Nritta (pure dance, technique) - includes movement exercises, basic tatkar (footwork), chakkars (turns), rhythmic patterns and timing, and recitation of the bols (language of the dance). Nritya (dance with rhythm and expression) - use of interpretive gestures, expression, and rendering of traditional songs and poems. Natya (drama) - learning the art of storytelling, the nava rasa (nine sentiments), working with ardhanariswara-shiva/shakti (masculine/feminine energies).

Clothing: Wear clothes that allow freedom of movement: salwar/kurta outfits, short-sleeves or long sleeves (rather than sleeveless) tops, skirt with leggings or tights underneath, sweat pants with a tunic/long shirt covering the hips, leotard, or t-shirt. Hair needs to be pinned or tied back so it does not cover the face or become distracting while dancing. Kathak is danced with the feet bare and so it is customary to keep feet and the floor as clean as possible.

The intermediate modern class taught by Brian Crabtree is a Cunningham-based technique class. It develops from standing exercises for the back, legs, and feet and continues into moving phrases that stem from the teacher's own choreography, which bares the templates of several years' study with some of the best teachers of the Cunningham style. Mr. Crabtree has developed a method of phrasemaking that incorporates vivid use of the torso and legs, fluid changes of direction, and frequent shifting back and forth between parallel and turned-out shapes. Each standing exercise builds toward the complete phrase danced toward the end of class. Performance quality and ease of motion will be stressed in the development of material. Basic knowledge of alignment and some exposure to basic modern technique is recommended to attend.

GYROKINESIS® movement principles offer the same benefits also found in yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming and tai chi, but are not derived from these other exercise modalities.

GYROKINESIS® exercises are based on seven natural elements of spinal movement: forward, backward, left side, right side, left twist, right twist and circular, as well as all other joint articulation. Working with rhythmic, spiraling, and undulating movements, GYROKINESIS® exercises improve kinetic understanding and re-educates the body to move with fluidity, relaxation, elegance and power.

GYROKINESIS® exercises and combined breathing patterns help to increase range of motion in the body, release structural tension, stimulate blood flow, oxygenation, and energy through the nervous system. As a result the entire organism is strengthened which leads to improved health and vitality.

Horton Technique - Wednesday 8:30 - 9:30pm, $12/class

“I am sincerely trying to create a dance technique based entirely upon corrective exercises, created with a knowledge of human anatomy; a technique which will correct physical faults and prepare a dancer for any type of dancing he may wish to follow, a technique having all the basic movements which govern the actions of the body, combined with a knowledge of the origin of movement and a sense of artistic design”. --Lester Horton.

Join us for one hour of Horton Technique, every Wednesday from 8:30-9:30 at the Dance Complex, Cambridge, starting November 7th.

It's our goal to get a fun, enthusiastic group participating together regularly, taking their flexibility, flow, and core strength to a higher level, while simultaneously improving their dancing. In this class you will learn the basics of Horton technique in order to improve your extension and presence, increase your strength, flexibility and the coordination of your body and mind. Horton is also designed to be anatomically corrective for posture, alignment and joint issues, as well as rehabilitating past injuries and preventing new ones.

Tap Dance

Christina Harrington

Tap Dance - Saturdays 1:00 - 2:30pm, $10 for half class / $13 for whole class

Level 1 - Starting fresh with the very basics, you will develop a repertoire of steps and learn to put them together in choreography. For those with little or no tap experience, or those who would like a refresher on the basics. Appropriate for adults and teens of most fitness levels.

Level 2 - Develop a larger repertoire of steps, and apply existing knowledge of the basics to more complex combinations.

Both levels are offered together in a combined 90 minute class. The first hour is dedicated to level 1 steps and basic choreography. This part of class is open to all students of all levels. The last 30 minutes are offered for students who wish to stay and try advanced steps and combinations; prior tap experience is strongly recommended. Since classes are offered with a drop-in option, I always review past steps and try to introduce 1 or 2 new steps each class. Then we’ll do some short combos and finish out class by reviewing and adding onto a choreographed number, usually one whole song per 12-16 week semester.

Level 1 focuses mainly on learning the basics of tap: shuffle, flap, slap, buffalo, hops, essence, heel, toe, stamp, stomp, cramp roll, ball change, manhattan, drawbacks, maxi ford and all of the various combos involving these steps like flap ball change, shuffle hop step, flap toe hop, flap heel, with a strong emphasis on technique and repetition in order to encourage muscle memory and confidence to create sounds clearly each time.

Level 2 includes more complex steps including double drawbacks, double and triple buffalo, cincinatti, time steps, traveling time steps, military, Irish, waltz clog, double and single pullbacks, cramp roll turns, maxi ford with a pick-up, etc. The combos are faster and more extensive. Class will incorporate a lot of quick footwork that may not necessarily involve difficult steps, but that require strong technique and speed.

Clothing: Comfortable exercise-type clothing, pants short enough to see ankles (or rolled up). Tap shoes are not required for the first class or two (wear shoes in which you can stand on the ball of your feet). STREET SHOES ARE NOT ALLOWED IN ANY STUDIO AT ANY TIME.
