Intern Experience

Amanda Rodriguez shares her experience as an Intern at The Dance Complex

Amanda Rodriguez, Non-Profit Arts Administration Intern

My name is Amanda Rodriguez I attended Newbury College and graduated May 2017 with my Bachelors of Science is Business Management.

How did you find The Dance Complex's Internship Program?
Well, I first heard about this opportunity through the website I just happened to be looking for more ways to get involved within my community and this seemed like a perfect fit.

Can you describe what your experience as an Intern been like so far?
I really enjoy being an intern because it gives me insight on the daily operations of how to run a business, it’s very gratifying work. Plus, the perks of receiving extra work study slips are a nice touch.

What types of projects have you worked on?
So far I have helped with the Festival of Us, You, We, & Them, Summer Sizzle, and at the moment I’ve been putting some ideas together for PARK (ing) DAY; which I’m really excited for!

What has been the most exciting part of your Internship so far?
The most exciting part of my internship thus far would have to be the marketing portion of promoting classes and workshops. I really enjoyed interacting with many of the artists and coming up with ideas for the festivals. I like having a say and I know at the Dance Complex my voice will be heard.

What are your current career goals, and how to your foresee this Internship as beneficial is preparing you for those goals?
A few of my goals are to go to grad school in the Spring to attain my second bachelors in the fine arts. I hope to combine my business degree with my background in dance to one day open up my very own non profit studio. Financially I could never dream to afford dance but here at the DC I can. I want to bridge the gap between dance and financial difficulty so kids who live in low income areas can have a place to express themselves freely with no judgment. I feel the Dance Complex does that for me and I am inspired to pass on my experiences with other kids.

Would you encourage other students and young professionals to apply to our Internship program?
Most definitely I would encourage other students and young professionals to apply as an Intern. I say this because it’s an awesome experience to learn the ins and outs of keeping a business up and running. Whether it’s through maintenance, finances, programs, operations, or communications. These are all vital in learning how to maintain a business of your own, and I am so lucky to be apart of such a great team!
