The Dance Complex Elevates Peter DiMuro to Executive Artistic Director

Cambridge, MA August 23, 2017 -- The Dance Complex, a central hub of dance that celebrates dance for all, is elevating Executive Director Peter DiMuro to a new position as Executive Artistic Director. In this role, Peter will continue to manage the strategic operations of The Dance Complex while guiding the artistic direction of the Complex. In this fashion, Peter augments the position of The Dance Complex as a leader in the world of dance.

DiMuro came on as executive director in 2013 and has worked tirelessly to expand the staff and to fundraise while simultaneously restructuring the strategic and operational activities of the organization. In his artistic domain, he has established a series of successful programs at The Dance Complex, including Winter Wonder Dance Festival, the Accessible Dance Initiative, and most recently the Festival of Us, You, We & Them.

“When Peter was appointed to the role of executive director, we knew that it was the beginning of a new chapter for the organization, though scarcely anyone could have envisioned the ways he has helped the organization grow,” said Mary McCarthy, chair of the Board of Directors for The Dance Complex. “The announcement, today, recognizes the work he is already doing, both as an artist and as the director of strategic management for the organization. As we look forward, we are incredibly excited about what the future holds for The Dance Complex with Peter in this leadership position.”

DiMuro has received acclaim for his work as a performer, choreographer, director, teacher, and facilitator. As the founder of his own performance company, Peter DiMuro/Public Displays of Motion, he strives to develop and perform artistic works while cultivating dance and arts literacy, advocacy, and engagement.
As a rising, young dancer in Boston, he performed with Gerri Houlihan, Ruth Birnberg, Susan Rose, and in the eclectic repertory of Concert Dance Company. After leaving Boston, he joined the internationally acclaimed Liz Lerman Dance Exchange and served as the artistic director for many years. Over the years, DiMuro has been recognized as a Schonberg Fellow at The Yard/Martha's Vineyard, as a White House Millennial Artist in 2000, and as a Mayor of Boston/ProArts Arts Award recipient. He is the recipient of a 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from Salem State University. He has received grants for his work from the National Performance Network, the Mass Artists’ Foundation, Mass Cultural Council, MetLife Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. His work has been commissioned by leading presenters, including The Kennedy Center/DC, Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center/MD, Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Dance Place/DC, DanceNOW at Joe’s Public Theatre/NY, Dance Umbrella, the Emerson Majestic, Bates Dance Festival, American Dance Festival, AURAS Dance/Lithuania, and others.

“The Dance Complex is renowned as a pillar of dance, one that embraces and celebrates all forms of dance, from all different cultures, and enables artists to create and grow. We are an organization that welcomes all dancers, of differing backgrounds, ages, and abilities,” says DiMuro. “As the executive artistic director, I will continue to build upon this foundation, bringing together both high-level artistic programming and solid strategic plans to ensure that The Dance Complex is a leading voice in dance.”

The Dance Complex is supported by the Barr Foundation, The Boston Foundation, Eastern Bank, Central Square Business Association, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Cambridge Arts Council, Cambridge Community Foundation, New England Foundation for the Arts, James K. Spriggs Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and the Aliad Fund of The Boston Foundation.
