NEW CLASS: French Clements
Intermediate/Advanced Ballet
Tuesdays & Thursdays 11:00am-12:30pm, $12 (discount with pre-registration: buy 10 classes, get 1 for free), Starts: September 30th

Contact: 413.429.7890, french.clements@gmail.com

Description: New on the Boston dance scene, this class is for experienced dancers aged 14 and up who seek growth through truly individualized feedback. We start barre slowly, working to increase alignment, focus and deepen the use of the lungs. You'll get sweaty toward the end of barre, with plenty of arduous placement exercises, stretches, and balances. The center combinations are just plain fun, with adagios, waltzes, turns and meaty petit allegro. And big jumps, of course. Technical placement is emphasized to boost artistry; artistry is emphasized to increase daily confidence. Humor and improvisation keep things from getting stuffy. If you want to move vigorously, with expansive joy powering the movement, this class is for you. I work well with current professionals who need to unwind, intermediate/advanced students who want to get better, and anyone else looking to stay happy. Once things get going, we'll have an accompanist.

Clothing: Wear ballet slippers (or just socks) and whatever close-fitting apparel makes you feel good. STREET SHOES ARE NOT ALLOWED IN ANY STUDIO AT ANY TIME.

Kathak Classical Indian Dance for Children (girls & boys under 12 yrs), Sundays, Year 1 10:30am-11:30am, Year 2 11:30am -12:30pm

Contact: 978.568.1405 to register or for more information.

Description: Kathak is a highly sophisticated classical performing art characterized by intricate footwork, expressive movement of the hands and face, rhythmic intensity, swift turns and elegant stances. Wearing rows of small, brass bells on each ankle, the dancer alternates between recitation, footwork, fixed compositions, improvisation and story telling. In these classes, we focus on three aspects of the dance: Nritta (pure dance, technique) - includes movement exercises, basic tatkar (footwork), chakkars (turns), rhythmic patterns and timing, and recitation of the bols (language of the dance). Nritya (dance with rhythm and expression) - use of interpretive gestures, expression, and rendering of traditional songs and poems. Natya (drama) - learning the art of storytelling, the nava rasa (nine sentiments), working with ardhanariswara-shiva/shakti (masculine/feminine energies).

Clothing: Wear clothes that allow freedom of movement: salwar/kurta outfits, short-sleeves or long sleeves (rather than sleeveless) tops, skirt with leggings or tights underneath, sweat pants with a tunic/long shirt covering the hips, leotard, or t-shirt. Hair needs to be pinned or tied back so it does not cover the face or become distracting while dancing. Kathak is danced with the feet bare and so it is customary to keep feet and the floor as clean as possible.

Kathak is a highly sophisticated classical performing art characterized by intricate footwork, expressive movement of the hands and face, rhythmic intensity, swift turns and elegant stances. Wearing rows of small, brass bells on each ankle, the dancer alternates between recitation, footwork, fixed compositions, improvisation and story telling. In these classes, we focus on three aspects of the dance: Nritta (pure dance, technique) - includes movement exercises, basic tatkar (footwork), chakkars (turns), rhythmic patterns and timing, recitation of the bols (language of the dance), Nritya (dance with rhythm and expression) - use of interpretive gestures, expression, and rendering of traditional songs and poems, & Natya (drama) - learning the art of storytelling, the nava rasa (nine sentiments), working with ardhanariswara-shiva/shakti (masculine/feminine energies).

Hair needs to be pinned or tied back so it does not cover your face or become distracting while dancing. Kathak is danced with the feet bare and so it is customary to keep your feet and the floor as clean as possible.

Beginning Kathak (Level 1, for youth 12+ yrs & adults) Sundays 12:30-1:30pm, studio #5, $13/class - discount offered with pre-registration.

Description: Sean-nós ("old style") Irish dance is a percussive, expressive, close-to-the-floor step dance style. Historically performed as a solo dance form in informal settings, the sean-nós "old style" is looser and more improvisational than the newer Irish step dance styles that have prevailed since the early 1900s. Sean-nós dance experienced a serious decline in the 20th Century, and the art form nearly disappeared. But in recent years, a handful of influential dancers have brought the steps and traditions back to life, and now, sean-nós dance is flourishing. A sean-nós dance revival is sweeping Ireland and spreading to American dance communities as well. Some experience required, please ask instructor. Open to ages 14 through adult.
