Contact: 978.568.1405

Description: Kathak
is a highly sophisticated classical performing art characterized
by intricate footwork, expressive movement of the hands and
face, rhythmic intensity, swift turns and elegant stances.
Wearing rows of small, brass bells on each ankle, the dancer
alternates between recitation, footwork, fixed compositions,
improvisation and story telling. In these classes, we focus
on three aspects of the dance: Nritta (pure dance,
technique) - includes movement exercises, basic tatkar
(footwork), chakkars (turns), rhythmic patterns and
timing, and recitation of the bols (language of the
dance). Nritya (dance with rhythm and expression) -
use of interpretive gestures, expression, and rendering of
traditional songs and poems. Natya (drama) - learning
the art of storytelling, the nava rasa (nine sentiments),
working with ardhanariswara-shiva/shakti (masculine/feminine
energies).
Clothing: Wear
clothes that allow freedom of movement: salwar/kurta
outfits, short-sleeves or long sleeves (rather than sleeveless)
tops, skirt with leggings or tights underneath, sweat pants
with a tunic/long shirt covering the hips, leotard, or t-shirt.
Hair needs to be pinned or tied back so it does not cover
the face or become distracting while dancing. Kathak is danced
with the feet bare and so it is customary to keep feet and
the floor as clean as possible.

DANCE
Kieran Jordan
Beginner Irish Dance (Sean-nós "Old Style"
Step Dance)
Mondays 7:30-8:30pm
Pre-Registration
Required. Visit
www.kieranjordan.com to register.
Description: Sean-nós ("old style") Irish dance
is a percussive, expressive, close-to-the-floor step dance style.
It requires requires good music listening skills and a willingness
to play with rhythm and performance. Historically performed
as a solo dance form in informal settings, the sean-nós
"old style" is looser and more improvisational than
the newer Irish step dance styles that have prevailed since
the early 1900s. Sean-nós dance experienced a serious
decline in the 20th Century, and the art form nearly disappeared.
But in recent years, a handful of influential dancers have brought
the steps and traditions back to life, and now, sean-nós
dance is flourishing. A sean-nós dance revival is sweeping
Ireland and spreading to American dance communities as well.
This class will introduce students to the traditions, steps,
and styles of sean-nós dance. No experience required!
Please wear shoes with a smooth hard sole. Open to ages 14 through
adult.
Clothing: Wear soft-soled
shoes and comfortable clothing to class.
STREET SHOES ARE NOT ALLOWED IN ANY STUDIO AT ANY TIME.
