A note from Rozann:
Dear
Dancers,
In
years past, when important issues needed discussion, we
held community meetings. This notice will need to represent
such an assembly. The major news is about our latest renovations.
We
have brought the offices to the main floor, moved the
reception desk back a few feet, installed a fully-accessible
bathroom on the main floor, relocated the men's locker
room to the same floor as Studio 2, and installed a small
gender neutral bathroom on that level also. It's very
exciting.
Since
we first established our stewardship of the Odd Fellows
Hall 18 years ago, a major goal has been to make it accessible
to as many people as possible. This is the final step
to bring that dream to reality.
Happy
Dancyn,

Dance Currents presents: "Myths, Memories and Shadows of Morning"
Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27
8pm at the Dance Complex, The Julie Ince Thompson Theatre
Dance Currents mission is to strengthen the link between past, present and future dance. This concert will include four works in the repertory of Dance Currents, Inc., including dance legend Carla Maxwell’s Limon Etude. In addition, Kendra Heithoff,’s To Have and to Hold (2009) will be presented by this up and coming new choreographer.
Eleusian Fields and Fates, a premiere by Ms. Hassinger to Haydn’s String Quartet in G Major, Opus 77:1 has four sections: ‘Mount Olympus’, ‘The River Styx’, ‘Ceres and Persephone’ and ‘Poseidon, Athena and the Fates’. Ms. Hassinger presents the dualities in Greek Myths and offers a window into their intricacies. Waylaid (2008), music by Nickel Creek, was said by Theodore Bale of the Boston Herald to have “extraordinary clarity…. performed by Ms. Hassinger’s classically trained dancers with phrase after inventive phrase.”(Boston Herald, December 2008). Ms. Hassinger choreographed the piece after a trip to Appalachia with a youth group whose irreverent antics held up the process, and revealed gutsy personalities. Ms. Heithoff’s piece, to the music of Phillip Glass, was created through Green Street Studios Emerging Artist’s program and is a poignant re-telling of Ms. Heithoff’s grandmother’s life. It is dedicated to Evelyn VanErt (1/25/34-1/21/09). Ms. Hassinger and Dr. Delvyn Case, a composer, collaborated on Dayspring, the last piece in the program. According to Mr. Case, “Dayspring, an archaic work for sunrise, is an apt title for a piece concerned with openings and beginnings. Like its visual inspiration, Dayspring implies limitless possibility and joyful expectation. The intense quiet of the ending reminds me of the infinitesimal moment just before the first ray of light appears over the horizon.”
Dance Currents Inc. presently has a company of eight dancers who include Hannah Blitzblau (soloist for the Limon Etude), Jen Cote, Sarah Evans, Kendra Heithoff, Sarah Mosca, Mina Muraoka and Jessica Spinner. The concert will also feature the dancers in Ms. Heithoff’s piece: Jennifer Hardy, Whitney Holke, Jennifer Lamb and Kathryn Lutke
Carla Maxwell joined the Limon Dance Company in 1965. She became a principal dancer under Limon’s direction and in 1978, artistic director. Ms. Maxwell received the 1995 Dance Magazine Award and a 1998 Bessie Award for “finding a creative present in the context of a revered past, and thereby offering choreographic opportunity to multiple generations of artists; for inspired leadership and artistic accomplishment.” Kathy Hassinger is currently teaching “Perspectives in World Dance” at Emerson College, ballet with Jose Mateo’s Ballet Theater and a new repertory workshop of famous modern dances at The Dance Complex. Ms. Hassinger has produced ten concerts, including two at Eastern Nazarene college (2008, 2009), Bridging the Gulf,(2007) a benefit for victims of hurricane Katrina, Currents of Contemporary Dance (2008), Three Modern Choreographers (2005) at Triskelion Arts, in New York, and Dances to the Music of Archangelo Corelli (2004), at The Dance Complex. Kendra Heithoff, besides being an Emerging Artist through Green Street’s program, was a Juddertone artist/choreographer for December 2009 and recently joined Sokolow Now! Kendra has toured internationally with Global Worship Movement, and danced with Urbanity Dance Project, Nautilus Movement Theater and Black Label Movement. Ms. Heithoff is lead teacher for Boston Ballet’s Taking Steps Community Outreach program.

Shared Choreographers' Concerts
Held three times each year, this program provides an opportunity for new and developing artists to have their work produced in concert with their peers. Mentors provide guidance and feedback for the choreographers, dancers and producers from the first showing of an idea through, and beyond, the performances. It is also a vehicle for learning all aspects of producing, publicizing, designing, budgeting and documenting a concert; two dancers share these production responsibilities, under the guidance of the program mentor. These concerts are an extension of the learning process. Outside an academic program, artists often lack the supportive feedback and nurturing that is so crucial to their growth. A discussion with the audience follows each concert, providing an educational enrichment for all involved and a proven way of building an informed and committed following.
THE NEXT SCC WILL BE MAY 7 and 8, 2010.
SHOWINGS ARE SUNDAY, MARCH 21 AND APRIL 11, 2010. |
