Cambridge Science Festival: In/Out/Under/Transform
In/Out/Under/Transform!
Celebrate the marvels of the microbiome as we follow bacteria through the human body and outside, featuring local startups and a community lab that are discovering novel ways in which the microbiome can make an impact on society. Through theater, dance, interactive
demonstrations, and a brainstorming activity, we will learn and engage with the research of local organizations and explore how we can better serve local and global communities.

IN: GinkgoBioworks, a Boston-based biotech startup that creates fragrances and foods out of microbugs
OUT: OpenBiome, America’s first non-profit public stool bank, based in Somerville, dedicated to expanding safe access to fecal microbiota transplantation for the treatment of C. difficile
UNDER: Senseable Cities Underworlds Projects, an MIT project studying different species of bacteria, viruses and chemical compounds to help monitor urban health patterns, and its spinoff, Biobot Analytics, a Cambridge-based startup working directly with cities to transform their wastewater infrastructure into public health observatories to look at drug use, infectious disease and the microbiome. They are soon starting pilots in Cambridge, MA and Cary, NC.
TRANSFORM: EMW Street Bio, a Cambridge community biology and design lab that created Biota Beats, a microbial record player that translate bacterial growth into new forms of sound
