| What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
This workshop is highly focused on freestyle & confidence but we are tapping in to Afro-fusion and Caribbean styles to help do that. Afro fusion is a mixture of Afrobeats and other popular dance styles like Hip Hop, Pop, and more. Afrobeats comes from the musical genre “Afrobeat” originated in the 1960s and the 1970s by Fela Kuti, it is a blend of West African music, traditional Yoruba music with jazz, and more. |
| What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
I am from Haiti and grew up dancing in the streets and performances at school. Over the years, I’ve invested lots of training in classes –privates and groups to learn from the best. I’ve had lessons and teachings from the best professional dancers who come from South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica & more. As much as I’ve learned, I still never found any lessons on freestyle or confidence so I started teaching myself and finding my own ways to connect with my inner expression. I now teach Afro-fusion at Boston Public Schools and share all the knowledge I gathered from over the years with young children. I want to do the same for young adults, teens, & adults. |
| What can students expect from this class?
This is a beginner level class, it is catered to the people who don’t feel confident in their bodies when they dance. Students can expect to train their confidence in the dance styles and learn how to dance to specific music genres (Afro-fusion, Caribbean style) with pride. The goal is to unleash the fear of judgment and create a space of comfort for those who want to dance freely. |

…I am passionate about teaching this style because I believe it is needed in the dance industry, there are a lot of choreography classes but not much classes about the foundations of dance and confidence in dance. Especially when it comes to freestyle, it’s good to learn choreography but choreography means nothing if you don’t have any confidence within yourself to perform it. |
