This improvisation class is an opportunity to develop your personal style and strengths in contemporary improvisation. In this class we will ask questions such as “What does it mean to be present as a dancer?” and “How can we use improv to enhance our sense of presence?” We will explore variations of freedom and structure to fine-tune an improv score that highlights our own personal abilities as artists. This class is both for the dancers who just want to noodle and the dancers who can’t stand the noodle – as we discover how to make improv work for us.

The Improvisation Class is rooted in Contemporary Dance. Improvisation is an art form in which dancers actively make choreographic choices in real time. Improvisation lends itself to a strong sense of autonomy and freedom.

Ava has performed and directed improvisational pieces in a variety of settings, from the Museum of Science Atrium to New England Conservatory. For the past six years, she has been the Artistic Coordinator of On Display Harvard, an improvisational installation piece that honors the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in collaboration with Heidi Latsky Dance. She is a member of Evolve Dynamicz Dance Collective, a Boston-based company that draws heavily upon improvisation. Their most recent performance, Revive, was an evening of improv scores exploring collective healing and resilience.
