What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
Hip Hop Dance began at block parties in the Bronx in the 1970’s and drew from dance moves inspired by African Dance, Brazilian martial arts (Capoeira) and many Kung Fu movies. Bronx Rapper Afrika Bambaata drew from his experience watching African tribal dancing in creating the first group of hip hop dancers. DJ Kool Herc, inspired by his Jamaican roots, created the musical beats by spinning two records simultaneously. With many other influences along the way, Hip Hop has established itself as a dance form with a long history and vital and dynamic presence in our culture. |
