PlayGround

What can students expect from this class?

PlayGround is a physical movement practice for adults who could use more PLAY in their lives or in their movement. A session will integrate movement, stillness and sensory awareness to stimulate your body, mind, emotions and spirit. Sessions are set to music and blend simple patterns with expressive, freeform movement. You will be invited to listen to your body, sense, and make choices that feel good for YOU. PlayGround can be as vigorous or gentle as you desire and can be modified from seated. PlayGround draws from dance, martial arts, yoga, Nia, Authentic Movement and more, and no previous experience in any of these forms is required. Barefoot or non-street-shoes.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Playground is Nia-inspired but delivered differently. In this class, we work a bit more collectively as a community of facilitators and participants, who all have something to share. Techniques and practices are delivered by the facilitator; playlists and choreography are often shaped by the entire commUnity.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

PlayGround is primarily facilitated by Julianne Corey. From Julianne: My movement background includes ballet, yoga, somatic movement and mindfulness training. I am an Expressive Arts Therapist, both working in a clinical practice and teaching in the field. I hold the MFA in Creative Writing, Nia Black Belt, a variety of yoga certifications and I am a former member of the International Nia Training faculty, as well as Senior Lecturer at Lesley University. I taught Nia for over 20 years.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

…Because having a physical practice that brings me back to my senses, fuels my curiosity and makes room for everything I feel – however I show up – is life affirming… and I love sharing that with others!
