Acclaimed choreographer and founder of The Bang Group (TBC) David Parker returns to The Dance Complex with Showdown! (Excerpts), a TBC production that originally debuted at Joe’s Pub in New York City, on February 19th, 20th, 26th, and 27th.
David grew up in Lynnfield, MA and studied dance in Boston before moving to New York City in the late 70’s. There, he danced for nearly 20 years and, in 1995, co-founded The Bang Group (named for one of his early dances “featuring the unadorned body thuds of two men lying on the floor together, [culminating] in some syncopated kissing”) with Jeffrey Kazin. The Bang Group still spellbindingly, joyfully, and electrically smashes the boundaries drawn between percussive, classical, contemporary, and social dance styles while playfully exploring their limits.
“It’s hard for any of us in the dance world to see dance as plentiful,” explains Dance Complex artistic director Peter DiMuro, “and what David Parker brings to his choreography, to his collaboration, to his productions is this sense of plenty and generosity. David has long supported the Dance Complex by bringing his choreography and productions here, and he has been an advocate for very diverse dance to have a place in the world. So we’re grateful he’s here.”
