Join us as we explore a beginner repertoire of jigs and reels, while focusing on the joy and musicality of Irish dance! This class emphasize dancing as a joyful, social activity rather than a competitive one. Although each class addresses rhythm, timing, and technique, first and foremost the emphasis is on musicality: understanding the connection between music and dance, developing a listening ear, and trying to keep the music in the dancing. Students learn a mix of traditional step dancing, sean-nós dance, and set/ceili dancing. Dancers with 0-1.5 years of experience especially welcome. New students welcome throughout the semester.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Traditional or old-style Irish dance has been passed down from generation to generation, and is the precursor to the well-known modern competitive step dance/Riverdance. Old-style Irish dance focuses on the connection with the music and is deeply tied into the Irish music community here in Boston.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

Jackie O’Riley spent her formative dance years in the Irish set dancing community in Boston. Over the past 20 years, she has ardently sought out old-style or traditional step dancing, sean-nós dance, and set dancing and is now a respected performer and teacher, with a unique repertoire that includes older steps she’s collected from masters and field footage, and original material she’s composed.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

…I love sharing the joy I find in these small but meaningful movements.
