What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Son Cubano is a genre of music and dance that originated in the highlands of eastern Cuba during the late 19th century. It is a syncretic genre that blends elements of Spanish and African origin.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

Carlos Mateu, born and raised in Havana, Cuba, has been inspired by a rich culture of art and music since childhood. He studied visual arts at The National Academy of Fine Art in Havana. Carlos learned to dance to traditional Cuban music (Danzon, Son, Chachachá, etc.) from his grandparents. Later he dedicated himself to the study of the theory and history of Cuban music, and participated in lectures, discussions, and performances held by UNEAC (National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba) with leading musicologists such as Helio Orovio, author of the “Encyclopedia of Cuban Music”.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

“I am deeply passionate about sharing my cultural heritage with like-minded enthusiasts. Teaching others about the vibrant musical and dance traditions of Cuban Son fills me with joy, as I strive to uphold and strengthen my country’s rich cultural legacy. And seeing smiles on the faces of my students, is an immeasurable added bonus.”
