| What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?
Flamenco is an art form based on the various folkloric music traditions of southern Spain, developed within the gitano subculture of the region of Andalusia. Flamenco music is a variety of both contemporary and traditional musical styles typical of southern Spain. Flamenco is closely associated to the gitanos of the Romani ethnicity who have contributed significantly to its origination and professionalization. However, its style is uniquely Andalusian and flamenco artists have historically included Spaniards of both gitano and non-gitano heritage. |
| What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?
Omayra Amaya is a modern flamenco dancer and choreographer deeply rooted in gypsy tradition. Daughter of dancers Olga and Curro Amaya and grandniece of the legendary Carmen Amaya. Omayra first appeared on stage with her parent’s company. Her first choreographed role came at age twelve, as her father’s partner. By fifteen, she was touring internationally with various companies. Omayra attended the Boston Conservatory, received a BFA in Dance. |
