What can students expect from this class?

In class, Sylver guides his students through an hour of nonstop dance and choreography, allowing everyone to internalize the steps, feel the rhythms, and work up a sweat – celebrating each other’s cultures. ‘Froca classes include steps and rhythms from Madagascar, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo, Ethiopia, Mali, Guinea, Ghana, Togo, Senegal, Trinidad, Jamaica, and more. Students can expect a joyous celebration of traditional and contemporary African dances and music. Classes have a community feeling and people love to connect on and off the dance floor.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

‘Froca is a celebration of songs and dances from across Africa and the Caribbean. Set to the latest popular African and Caribbean music, ‘Froca draws on movements and dances rooted in deep tradition as well as steps that have gained popularity in recent years. The class consist of an hour of nonstop dance and choreography, allowing everyone to internalize the steps, feel the rhythms, and work up a sweat – celebrating each other’s cultures. ‘Froca classes include steps and rhythms from Madagascar, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo, Ethiopia, Mali, Guinea, Ghana, Togo, Senegal, Trinidad, Jamaica,…

 

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

Sylver is a professional dancer from Madagascar and has spent the last 15 years specializing in Malagasy popular dances, Afropop, Caribbean, Hip Hop, Jazz and contemporary techniques. He has performed with many of Madagascar’s most renowned musicians and performers, and has danced with a number of contemporary companies in Madagascar and abroad. In 2011, Sylver participated alongside 42 African dancers in a three-month intensive training at the renowned Ecole de Sable in Toubab Diallo, Senegal, focusing on traditional and urban African dances, also hip-hop and contemporary styles. Then he studied classical, modern and contemporary dance for 2 years at the Jerusalem Academy of Music in Dance.
