What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Hip Hop Dance began at block parties in the Bronx in the 1970’s and drew from dance moves inspired by African Dance, Brazilian martial arts (Capoeira) and many Kung Fu movies. Bronx Rapper Afrika Bambaata drew from his experience watching African tribal dancing in creating the first group of hip hop dancers. DJ Kool Herc, inspired by his Jamaican roots, created the musical beats by spinning two records simultaneously. With many other influences along the way, Hip Hop has established itself as a dance form with a long history and vital and dynamic presence in our culture.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

Sharon began dancing Hip Hop with Robin Tyler and her Funk girl group in Cambridge, MA. She went on to teach Hip Hop as part of her T.A. at Boston Conservatory, where she earned he MFA in Dance and wrote her thesis in Hip Hop history and evolution. She has performed and choreographed across the US: locally at The Dance Complex and Strand Theater, in NYC at WAXworks and HATCH Presenting Series at Jennifer Muller Works and Greenspace in Long Island City and internationally, including at Paris Music Festival and Disneyland Paris. Sharon draws from her background, not only as an accomplished dancer but as a world champion martial artist in kung fu, the most dance-like of the martial arts.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

…I am passionate about teaching Hip Hop dance style because: it is a celebration of life and culture with roots in Africa as well as in Brazilian martial arts.
