Intermediate Modern Dance Technique

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

My approach to teaching modern dance builds upon some of the early modern dance values and movement characteristics such as individual expression, breath connection, articulation of the spine, and exploring our relationship with gravity.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

Kristy Kuhn Donnelly is a dance artist and educator in the greater Boston area. She is currently a part-time faculty member at Bridgewater State University and Stonehill College, teaching various dance technique and theory courses along with dance conditioning and yoga. Kristy had the pleasure of working with Gibney Dance, Treehouse Shakers, Jenni Hong Dance, Stephan Koplowitz, and other wonderful artists in NYC, in addition to Weber Dance, Prometheus Dance, Audra Carabetta & Dancers, Stephanie Heroux, ACE Entertainment, and Kelly Donovan & Dancers in Boston. She earned a PhD in Educational Studies from Lesley University, an MFA in Dance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a BS in Biology and dance minor from Bucknell University. Her passion for movement extends into her work as a certified yoga teacher, barre teacher, and personal trainer. Regardless of the movement practice, Kristy desires to provide opportunities for others to re-connect with themselves and with others in their community through the experience of the moving body.

I have been exposed to variety of modern dance styles through my dance education and professional work. My teaching of modern dance continues to evolve from my studies of dance, mind/body practices, anatomy, and body conditioning and my interactions with others both inside and outside of the dance studio.

What can students expect from this class?

We begin class with a thorough warm up from floor to standing that integrates aspects of yoga postures, breathwork, and body conditioning to support our modern technique. Class progresses to move through space with full-bodied combinations that allow us to explore actions of the spine, our relationship with gravity, and elements of floorwork and improvisation. We will have fun re-connecting with our joy of movement and connecting with one another!

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

it enables us to connect with ourselves and with others in our community through the experience of the moving body
