  • What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching? 
Genre: Flamenco Dance / Style: Amaya. Flamenco is a song, music and dance style which is strongly influenced by the Gitanos (Spanish Romani), but which has its deeper roots in Moorish musical traditions. Flamenco culture originated in Andalusia (Spain), but has since become one of the icons of Spanish music, dance and even Spanish culture in general.
  • What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject? 
Omayra Amaya’s legacy is one of a deep gypsy flamenco tradition. The daughter of flamenco dancers Olga and Curro Amaya and grandniece the greatest Flamenco dancer who ever lived, Carmen Amaya.
Omayra first appeared on stage with her parent’s company, often interrupting their performances. Her first choreographed role came at age twelve, when she performed as her father’s partner. By the time Omayra was fifteen, she was touring and performing internationally with her parents and other dance companies.  Already a seasoned performer, Omayra sought to expand and enrich her art by studying other dance forms. She attended the Boston Conservatory where she received a BFA in Dance.
  • What can students expect from this workshop?
The workshop will focus on Flamenco dance technique, dance choreography /composition, and Flamenco dance and music structure. Studying various “Palos” (Flamenco Rhythms) and the structure of the “cante” (song) for the composition of flamenco dance.

It is part of my heritage, my culture. It is my way of expression. On 16 November 2010 Flamenco was designated World Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
