Samba and Afro-Brazilian

What can students expect from this class?

The main goal of our class is to have fun and feel the joy of movement and expression. We also strive to build technical competence and an appreciation for Brazilian culture through music and dance. We start with a warm-up, work on technique and styling, and often learn a short combo.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Samba is an Afro-Brazilian style that is unique to Brazil and part of the African diaspora. Born of resistance, samba is a dance, rhythm and culture that originated among disenfranchised communities of Black Brazilians and spread to the mainstream and beyond. It is now one of the country’s most famous exports. Samba is constantly evolving in all of its forms; currently there are many popular samba sub-genres.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

SambaViva teachers have a minimum of 5 (and as many as 20!) years dancing and training samba and other Brazilian styles. All have trained closely with Brazilian instructors both intensively and over many years. Our regular instructors have traveled extensively in the country to study dance but also to participate in the culture, learn the language, and explore the many sites and experiences Brazil has to offer.

Finish this statement: I am passionate about teaching this style because…

…samba is contagious!
