Two Move Tuesday (Shuffle, Sway and Swing for Boston Balboa)

What can students expect from this class?

Welcome to “Two Move Tuesday” – a dynamic two-class pop-up series designed for Balboa at the Intermediate to Advanced level (Need to know moves like toss outs, lollies, swivels).

Let’s elevate our repertoire and foster a stronger dance community together! This a drop-in series focused on enriching your Balboa vocabulary and repertoire with each step. Our aim is to strike a perfect balance between refining technique for both followers and leaders while nurturing creativity within a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

This course is guided by a dynamic combo of Toni Wickson, Emily Schuhmann, and Patrick Draus and run by the emerging community organization Shuffle, Sway, and Swing.

What is the legacy of the genre/form/style you are teaching?

Balboa is a vernacular swing dance from Southern California in the 1920s and 30s, and is indebted to the African-American roots and culture of Swing Jazz and Swing dancing. We encourage everyone to explore the history of this dance, the dancers that created it in Southern California, and the music and musicians that made it possible.

What background, training, and or relationship do you have with this style/technique/class subject?

SSaS is a community run organization that seeks to create opportunities for folks in the greater Boston area to swing, shuffle, and sway. We look forwards to sharing more about ourselves – for now come learn Balboa and get to know us.
