Join us for an exciting, heartfelt, and long overdue evening of dance, including the world premiere of our newest work, Imagined Warmth. Created over the tumultuous past 18 months, during periods of isolation, distancing, and finally, reconnection, Imagined Warmth brings to life the vast range of emotional experiences felt by our company and the rest of the country. A collection of reactions and feelings turned into solid, moving bodies, this work will serve as validation, catharsis, and a communal laugh-cry of recognition at the audacious impact of the pandemic.

Included in this program are excerpts from NJD’s oldest piece of repertory, AGEN, that fit beautifully into the topic of enduring, coping and connecting. Finally, another new work by Natalie, Cocoon, will be danced by former NJD member and Guest Artist, Lea D’Arminio. We are thrilled to welcome Lea back to perform with us in this visceral and empowering solo created during our shared time of confusion, grieving, and overcoming.

Natalie Johnson has always had a passion for movement generation and visceral artistic expressions. She began dancing at Mountain Valley Dance in Alamosa, CO and she continued and broadened her dance education with programs and intensives at Peridance Capezio Center Certificate Program, the American Dance Festival, and The Boston Conservatory. Balanced with her love of movement is her relish of language, literature, and poetry. This led Natalie to Bowdoin College, where she earned her BA in English and Dance, and this fascination with language is one of the most pervasive themes in the company repertory.

Natalie received three distinct fellowships while at Bowdoin to fund her research in dance and choreography, and she was honored with the Dance Group Award upon graduation. She has performed masterworks by William Forsythe, Trisha Brown, and Igal Perry, and premiered original repertories by current choreographers Jesse Zaritt, Charlotte Griffin, Gwyneth Jones, Emily Wolfe, Alberto del Saz, Juliana Garber, and Annette Herwander.

Natalie has presented her choreography throughout the United States. Venues and programs include the American Dance Festival, Center for Performance Research, The Dance Complex, Gibney Dance Center, Brooklyn Arts eXchange (BAX), Harlem Repertory Theatre, Franco-American/Bates (FAB) Dance Concert, Triskelion Arts, Prop Thtr, Fasseas White Box Theater in Chicago, and more.

Natalie is a recent recipient of the prestigious Next Steps in Boston Dance Grant from The Boston Foundation. In 2016-2017, Natalie completed a yearlong artistic residency with 1010 Artist Residency, which supported her creation of the evening-length production, Sleeptalking. She is a three-time commissioned choreographer of Simantikos Dance Chicago, and received an Artist Grant from the Belmont Cultural Council in 2019 to support her evening-length production, AGEN. Most recently Natalie completed a month-long residency at the Mauser Foundation in Costa Rica in April of 2021.
