Kristen Jones, who prefers KJ, is a recent graduate of Brown University, where she studied Biology and Environmental Science. During her time there, she pursued her passion for the arts through participation in Attitude Dance Company, an A Capella group, and various coffeehouse and theater performances.
For as long as she can remember, KJ had a love for both the ars and biology/environmental science and both have influenced her career decisions thus far. Upon entering college, KJ’s focus was on the sciences, specifically ecology research, however, by the time graduation approached, she came to a different conclusion. “I had come to terms with how important dance and the arts were to me” KJ said, “I decided that I owed it to myself to explore careers within those fields.” Though she is pursuing jobs in dance and choreography, KJ was drawn to administrative work as well. Through her position at The Dance Complex, KJ hopes to understand the business-related aspects of dance studios so she can eventually help make them accessible to an even wider range of community members!
KJ began dancing in Boston when she joined DanceWorks Boston in 2018, and is now in her third season of choreographing and dancing with them. She credits DanceWorks with her entrance to the dance scene in Boston and was the main reason why she moved to Boston after graduation. KJ stated, “I love my friends and community there, and am so happy to be with them for another season!”
The first class KJ took at The Dance Complex was a DanceWorks workshop this past winter. KJ admits “I drove to the wrong location the first time I tried to come here … but everything was wonderful once I found the right place!”
What is KJ’s favorite part about working at The Dance Complex so far?
KJ’s favorite part about working at The Dance Complex so far has been the sense of community and caring that she’s seen and felt from so many people here; staff and work study members, dancers, teaching artists, parents, etc. KJ says “everyone I’ve spoken to has welcomed me warmly with open arms. There are so many groups and individuals that have been working out of The Dance Complex for months or years, and it’s clear that they feel comfortable and empowered here. I can’t wait to continue getting to know the range of people that make up The Dance Complex community!”
